I'll Trade You George Tenet for a Plane

(FORTUNE Magazine) – If you hear that Tom Ridge was just traded for two F-16 fighter jets, don't be alarmed. Collectibles maker Topps has launched an Enduring Freedom picture card set that includes world leaders like Vice President Cheney, plus patriotic scenes like the reopening of Wall Street. But the real emphasis (half of the 90-card set) is on the American military arsenal, like the F-14A Tomcat and the USS Enterprise (with stats on the back).

Arthur Shorin, CEO of Topps, the leading baseball-card manufacturer, says the cards are an effective way for kids to learn about the war on terrorism. Normally card collectors seek to own a complete set, but Shorin doesn't mind if a certain card isn't kept in mint condition. "I think kids will stomp that bin Laden card and throw it in the garbage," he says. Although targeted at kids ages 6 to 13, so far the cards are more popular among adults, at least at Squiggy's Dugout, a collectibles shop in New Rochelle, N.Y. Shorin wouldn't comment on sales so far.

A pack of cards costs $1.99, and a portion of that goes to charity. Shorin says that a second set may be introduced (three sets were made during Desert Storm), but recent gains by the Northern Alliance may make it unnecessary. Says Shorin: "This may be the victory series, and that's okay by me."
