Lost Rock & Roll Masterpieces, Vol. 16
(FORTUNE Magazine) – "Sang Pour Sang" by Johnny Hallyday, from 100% Johnny: Live a la Tour Eiffel (Mercury) French rock always sounds as if it's played by sterile studio musicians (because it is). But Johnny Hallyday has been around for 30 years, and 300,000 people showed up for his Paris concert in 2000. It's hard to think of another performer who could draw that crowd. "Sang Pour Sang"--written by his son--means "blood for blood"; spoken, it sounds like French for "100%." Johnny has a tendency to oversell, but his restraint brings the song to life. We should listen to him more. He's cooler than Tom Jones. Hey, Johnny, bienvenue. --Gregory Curtis |
