Keep The Wine
By David Rynecki

(FORTUNE Magazine) – During a recent visit to Charleston, S.C., we were amazed to discover one of the broadest wine selections we've seen--in, of all places, a Piggly Wiggly. Can it be? Dom Perignon and Opus One in aisle eight? It turns out that the supermarket chain now features higher-end wines along with more affordable quality labels. Credit goes to Piggly Wiggly wine buyer Craig Massey, who has introduced popular winemakers from Argentina, France, and California, as well as a handful of limited-production vintners--most for less than $15. "I like wines that are a value and also have an esoteric quality," he says. We gave Massey $100 to see what he'd buy.

Rosemount Estate Shiraz Cabernet 2000 ($7.99) An Australian blend that's great with pizza.

Columbia Crest Grand Estates Chardonnay 2000 ($10.99) Drinks like a Chardonnay that would cost twice as much.

Saint-Hilaire Brut 1997 ($11.99) Naturally fermented sparkling wine that can compare with the best French champagnes.

Conundrum from Caymus Vineyards 2000 ($24.99) One of the best blends I've ever tasted.

Carmenet Moon Mountain Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 1998 ($39.99) Big and bold. Great with a steak or lamb. One of my all-time favorites.
