Playing the Pool
By Andy Serwer

(FORTUNE Magazine) – To some, March is all about the Ides, or the beginning of spring, or even St. Patrick. To me and millions like me, it's about madness. As in the NCAA basketball tournament. From 64 teams down to one, there is nothing like it in all of sports. I should know; I run FORTUNE's pool. (Please don't tell the IRS!) The Web is a natural for March Madness pools, since it allows participants to easily see how everyone else is faring. ("How did she pick College of Charleston over Kansas!?") Problem is, people like me spend more time playing the pool than working. So why fight it? A company called digitalBANG out of Cincinnati (Go, Bearcats!) is selling a software package that lets companies set up their own customized pools. "Why should employers fight office gambling pools? Employees are going to do it anyway and waste valuable company time and money, kill hundreds of trees, and tie up office Xerox machines for weeks." And it's a morale booster, say the people at digitalBANG. Yeah, baby! Check it out at www.hoopsfrenzy.com.
