Lost Rock & Roll Masterpieces, Volume 17

(FORTUNE Magazine) – "Cruisin'" by Booker T & the MG's, from That's the Way It Should Be (Columbia)

Although they record only instrumentals under their own name, this is the band that every rock singer wishes he could sing with--and almost every rock singer has. To list a few: Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, Rufus Thomas, Eddie Floyd, Johnny Taylor, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Lou Reed, Eddie Vedder, Neil Young, and--assuming they count as singers--John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd. That's the Way It Should Be was by far the coolest release of 1994, and "Cruisin'" shows exactly what all those singers are lusting after--perfect time, an economy of notes, and a wave of rhythm. Just try to keep your feet from movin'.
