(FORTUNE Magazine) – How do large companies stack up in their own industries? That's what the list inside reveals. Among the notable movers: Gateway and Disney jumped from No. 6 to No. 2 in computers and in entertainment, respectively, and Bear Stearns went from No. 7 to No. 1 in securities. The three lowest scorers? Bankrupt Consolidated Freightways, Enron, and Kmart. --CHRISTOPHER TKACZYK

Here's how we did the calculations. For the industry rankings, the Hay Group took the ten largest companies by revenues in 66 industries, including large subsidiaries of foreign firms. They surveyed 10,000 executives, directors, and securities analysts, who rated the companies in their own industries using eight criteria (see table on the previous page). The top ten list was determined differently. For that, the respondents were asked to select the ten companies they admired most in any industry. Respondents chose from a list of companies that ranked in the top 25% in last year's survey; the list also included companies that ranked below the first quartile overall but finished in the top 20% of their industry. Those differing methodologies explain why, for example, Philip Morris (now Altria) scored so high on the industry list but didn't make the top ten: The tobacco industry tends to grade more generously than others.
