(FORTUNE Magazine) – "Woke Up This Morning" Etta James, from Etta James Rocks the House (Chess)

This is a live recording from September 1963, at the New Era Club in Nashville. It's hard to decide which is better--Etta's knockout version of the B.B. King classic or the photographs in the liner notes. One shows the white recording engineer staring glumly into space in the midst of a rocking club; a clock on the wall says ten after two. Another shows Etta's right wrist neatly wrapped in an Ace bandage. You have to wonder who exactly was on the other end of the punch. --Gregory Curtis
