Why it's admired:
The world's top-selling automaker has in recent years battled natural disasters such as Japan's 2011 tsunami, along with a string of recalls over issues such as unintended acceleration. Still, in 2013 Toyota's 9.98 million in car sales bested those of rival General Motors by 270,000 units. The company's investment in gas-electric technology enabled Prius to take off as a leading brand, and helped change the way drivers across the globe think of hybrids.     --C.D.
