Why it's admired
Big Blue gets respect for generating fresh ideas despite its massive size. Primarily selling to big business and government clients, IBM is working in cloud computing, invests heavily in R&D, and routinely gets more U.S. patents each year than any other company.

The global IT player's stock price is down nearly 30% since a high in July, but the company has weathered the economic crunch relatively well: Although quarterly sales are down, its record $103.6 billion revenue in 2008 beat expectations. -L.D.
