A PalmPilot Just For Shaq
By David Lidsky

(FORTUNE Small Business) – I once heard a standup comedian quip that no men's razor has a rotating head, lubricating strip, and stubble expunger, because it would weigh 45 pounds. If only Aqcess Technologies, creator of the Qbe Cirrus Personal Computing Tablet (www.qbenet.com), knew that joke before they created this unwieldy device.

The Qbe (pronounced "cube") is a real PC (400 megahertz Pentium II processor running Windows 98) loaded with cool features--handwriting recognition, speech recognition, built-in digital camera, and the de rigueur post-iMac slick look. The idea is for doctors, building contractors, or other on-the-go professionals to get full computing power while they do their jobs. But this more-than-six-pound behemoth is a bit much to lug around as you make morning rounds or inspect a construction project.

So just plop it on your desk, right? Besides defeating the point, that produces an awful glare--and the tangle of cords from everything that hangs off it (keyboard, mouse, etc.) is a mess.

Tech support answered me quickly and was very friendly, counseling patience. I suppose if I had plunked down the astonishing $4,745 (list price) this baby costs, I'd have the incentive to develop the patience--and strength--needed to love it. Call us when the Qbe weighs two pounds and costs $2,000.
