Save Time (and Trees) Without a Paper Trail
By Maggie Overfelt

(FORTUNE Small Business) – An empty desk doesn't have to be evidence of...well, you know. It could just mean that you're using some of the sites below that quicken some of the most paperwork-heavy tasks that small businesses face.

ENVIRON.COM Frustrated from constantly filling out thick EPA requirements on your building's indoor air quality? Environ.com offers free, downloadable software that consolidates your biennial reports (covering all environmental compliance sectors) in the proper EPA flat format. Step-by-step forms are simple to fill out, and you'll get e-mailed updates on current EPA news. Also receive fair warning: Scan the bulletin boards to see when the next EPA rep is coming to town to check up.

IGO.COM You're on a business trip when you lose a battery for your Samsung cell phone and crack your AC adapter for the Dell laptop. No fear: These remote problems can be solved at iGo.com. Click on the "Find Mine" feature for a list of mobile goods. If you can't locate it, click on the live-chat help--two out of our four responses were immediate. Only problem? We couldn't find parts for a laptop older than three years.

INCENTIVECITY.COM Give your employees a little reward (a new nine-iron?) for last month's productivity. With help from this site's reps, you create your company's own incentive program, complete with a Website that everyone can access and a database of applicable supplies. The HR jargon and sophisticated tech for your own database take a while to master. Call for help and price quotes.

MYCUSTOMS.COM You have a decent Website and a great product that would sell well across the pond. Going global via the Net is easy, right? Not quite. (See "Going Global," page 98.) Unless you have time to figure out how to classify your product internationally, try myCustoms.com. The site automates cross-border trade by automatically calculating shipping costs and checking international law compliance (among other things) for a fee--a teeny percentage of your products' revenue. Fill out the identity form once and update only when you add a new product.

ONECORE.COM It's a mini-manager for all your company's financial programs (401k, payroll, etc.): Easy-to-navigate OneCore.com lets you aggregate and administer your bookkeeping and most of your money matters. Designate the numbers just to your accountant with the Multi-User Access feature, and if you need help from the site, it tries to match you up with the same rep each time (we got two, though). Another comfort: Dell offers OneCore.com's services on some of its newest PCs.

SALESCIRCULAR.COM Looking more like someone's personal page of deal-of-the-day notes than an actual comparative-price Website, SalesCircular.com needs work, and not only aesthetically. You can search for electronics and other consumer products by state, but about 15 states are missing. The laptop lists are detailed (with all of the product info), but listings are in no particular order (not even alphabetical). And clicking on Buying Tips only yields answers to questions like, What is a laptop computer?
