Our Panel's Greatest Hits Senior editor Lori Ioannou asked five venture capital experts and investors to take a crack at our Big Idea list. They ranked and evaluated their favorite companies. We present the results:
(FORTUNE Small Business) – THE JUDGES Stewart Alsop GENERAL PARTNER New Enterprise Assoc. Menlo Park, Calif. 1. AstroVision Creative as an idea, but the investment proposition is daunting. 2. FairAir I wish these guys luck, but they haven't signed up the big airlines yet. 3. FeRx Magnetizing drugs to deliver them is interesting on the face of it. 4. IBEX If the company delivers on its technology, it looks like a winner. 5. MOCA Project forecasts are its strength and weakness. 6. NewspaperDirect The customer actually pays for this service, and everyone makes money. Wow! 7. Qbiquity The idea sounded dumb at first, but somehow it stuck with me. 8. Second Sight What a good objective: to make blind people see again. Wow, again 9. UPromise Nice concept, and the company is extremely well financed too. 10. Zipcar Sure, this is a killer idea. But it's terrifying because you have to finance all those cars. Esther Dyson CHAIRMAN EDventure Holdings New York City 1. UPromise Genuine social benefit. The CEO has a great record in marketing. 2. GeoTrust A useful idea. Helps foster environment of trust online 3. ServiceEngine The company believes in its own service and uses it. It works! 4. zBox This kind of device is absolutely necessary to make e-commerce work. 5. Visicu Good use of assets. Will save lives, which makes it hard to beat. 6. Entercept The company tackles a real problem. The relationship with Cisco is a great boost. 7. Upoc Benefits from viral marketing; kids selling it to their friends 8. Savage Beast A winner if their business sense is as good as their market feel 9. BrandStamp Clever. A lot depends on the ability to sign up retailers and vendors. 10. Zipcar This may or may not be successful, but I hope people adopt the model. Yogen Dalal MANAGING PARTNER Mayfield Menlo Park, Calif. 1. DEKA Research Only a genius like Dean Kamen could create this product. Downside: not a big market 2. DataPlay Its product's small size and low power give it an advantage. 3. Atheros Will have a profound impact on industry if it works as advertised 4. ShareWave Is it a "must have" or a "nice to have"? 5. Entercept Upside: clever approach. Downside: eventually, this will not be protectable. 6. inViso Must be designed into mass-market products to become acceptable. 7. AnswerFriend Is this the next step in making speech recognition truly useful? 8. Phoenix Competitive to other security and monitoring systems. Fragmented markets a plus 9. Optiant Lots of big players will buy this company. 10. Sensis Improving the safety of airport runways is important! George Kledaras PRESIDENT AND CEO Javelin Technologies New York City 1. Signature Bioscience The name has to go, but it looks like a manageable business with the right technology. 2. Interfolio.com I love this as a large market now and a growing trend. 3. ShareWave This company has a huge vision and a large targeted market. 4. Second Sight This business looks like it could be sold at almost any stage. 5. Entercept A $2 billion market and a strong group of partners like Cisco 6. PlusFunds.com I love a company that helps people make more wealth. Focused 7. OpenReach Dell's a partner, but I would like to see a completed marketing plan. 8. Fitability Online recruiter; I like the target market. 9. AnswerFriend Large idea. They need to sign distribution deals, though. 10. GoCargo.com Great backers. They understand the need to keep costs low. David Kelly CHAIRMAN IDEO Palo Alto 1. UPromise Promising. It has social value. Hey, who wouldn't want this company to succeed? 2. FeRx A novel approach to delivering medication. Time will tell. 3. First Solar It will have to compete with the coal and nuclear guys. 4. Rosetta If I were sure they could do it, they would be at the top of my list. 5. DigiScents Upside: triggers nostalgia and desire 6. inViso Its small form factor is compelling, and the technology has been demonstrated to work. 7. Visicu It taps into the best medical talent around. Sounds like a winner. 8. Qode An earnest attempt to marry online and offline shopping. 9. ShareWave Anytime you create a standard, you have a lot of work to do. 10. NewspaperDirect Remember how skeptical people were about USA Today? |
