A New Kind Of Bar Exam

(FORTUNE Small Business) – Are lowlifes messing with your highball? Francisco Guerra knows. His company's coasters and test strips can tell you whether your drink has been spiked with a "date-rape drug" like GHB. Just dribble a few drops onto a coaster; if it turns deep blue, there's something stiffer than vodka in your Cosmopolitan.

Guerra, 33, of Plantation, Fla., also founded Snow Masters and Foammasters, manufacturers of fake snow machines and foam cannons, respectively. He created Drink Safe Technology Inc. with a business partner two years ago. After investing $1 million of their own money, petitioning the DEA, and testing for nine months, Drink Safe released its coasters in late spring. In its first two months of operation, Drink Safe sold more than 40 million coasters and test strips. First-year revenues should top $20 million.

Today Guerra counts 41 universities among his clients. He recently signed a deal to distribute his products in 7-Eleven stores nationwide, where he expects them to appear in the fall. "People will pick up test strips along with their breath mints," he says. That's good news for wary Slurpee fans. --Erika Rasmusson
