Spilling Mink
By Nina Sovich

(FORTUNE Small Business) – In the past eight months the militant environmentalist group Earth Liberation Front (ELF) and its sister organization the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) have allegedly attacked more than 14 sites in the U.S.-- and all the attacks but one have been against small businesses. In August, ALF operatives sneaked onto the Roesler Brothers fur farm in Sultan, Wash., and released thousands of minks. The farm lost thousands of dollars to security upgrades, increased man-hours, and loss of local good will (one mink devoured $10,000 worth of exotic birds). "Even if they put us out of business, it wouldn't diminish the appetite for fur," says owner Kate Roesler. "But we're an easy hit." --NINA SOVICH
