(FORTUNE Small Business) – Antique Cash Registers are hot, popping up in trendy bars and boutiques around the country. So Phil Greco, a veteran register salesman and repairman in New York City who used to worry that digital registers would bankrupt him, has transformed his 25-year-old business. He buys old machines from former clients or at auction, refurbishes them, and then resells them for $400 to $1,500. This year Greco plans to market his wares to a growing cult of collectors--a small but potentially lucrative niche. Depending on the model, antique cash registers can sell for as much as $20,000. Handling such sales won't be a problem, says Greco. "I've got plenty of registers to ring up that kind of business." -- ARLYN TOBIAS GAJILAN
