In Glen Allen, talk of "the war" often refers to the Civil War. Walkerton Tavern, built in 1825, served as a store, post office, and hospital for wounded soldiers. Now it's a community center. The Meadow Farm is a living history museum offering sheep shearing, a working blacksmith, and more. You can even find a few antebellum houses near Mountain Road. Don't get the wrong idea -- for all its rich history, Glen Allen is a thriving modern suburb of Richmond. You'll find several shopping centers, an expansive office park, and a country club. A state-of-the art high-school is scheduled to open in 2010. --N.A.
