-- The dollar: No, garcon, I ordered a Big Mac, not a cognac

(MONEY Magazine) – If the weakened U.S. dollar has dashed your dreams of a foreign vacation, take heart. Our survey of hotel, transportation and dining costs in a dozen foreign cities and New York City shows that European prices have skyrocketed. The same Munich hotel room that cost about $80 last year now fetches $175. And some dinners for two in Paris have leaped from $20 to $75. But bargains can still be found in Sydney, where last year's $60 hotel room now goes for only $5 more. In overbuilt Singapore, the room is still $60. The catch: air fares to these faraway countries can easily top $1,000 round trip. One barometer of foreign bargains is the Big Mac. A McDonald's lunch of a Big Mac, fries and shake, which goes for only $2.25 or less in Rio, Hong Kong and Sydney, is still around $4 to $6 in pricey Paris, Tokyo, Zurich and New York City. So no matter where you head, you'll at least be able to afford lunch.
