SPOTLIGHT ON TAXES
(MONEY Magazine) – ''Even Seasoned Pros Are Confused This Year'' ((March)) put an ingenious spotlight on our ''simplified'' tax code. We should require all congressmen on tax-writing committees to do their own income taxes! John S. Moyse Louisville I'd bet against your Money Tip ((Your Taxes, March)) that readers should not expect a capital-gains tax cut. As soon as the message gets through to my colleagues in Congress that reducing the rate to 15% would spark increased investment, create jobs and reduce the federal deficit, we'll see the capital- gains cut become a reality. Robert W. Kasten Jr. U.S. Senator, Wisconsin Washington, D.C. In the April Money Update, you refer to people who turn in income tax cheaters as tax ''finks.'' The Oxford American Dictionary defines a fink as ''despicable.'' Anyone who reports a felony such as tax cheating is heroic, not despicable. R.D. West San Diego |
