MONEY DATELINE Eight great values for weekend winter getaways
By - Debra Wishik Englander

(MONEY Magazine) – The trend toward shorter but sweeter trips (see Travel Wise, June 1990) is going strong -- three or fewer nights was the average for more than 50% of 1989 vacations. Add that demand to the slowdown in travel and you now find a slew of hotel promotions for weekends. Most packages include more than a room: meals, theater tickets, activities and other treats are part of the price. -- Boston workout: Try the Royal Sonesta Hotel (800-766-3782) in Cambridge for a Spa Getaway: breakfast, use of the indoor pool, sauna, gym and facials or massage ($189 a person). -- Cajun style: One night ($109) at the Hyatt Regency New Orleans (800-233-1234) admits you to the Cajun Queen riverboat and Preservation Hall. -- Family on the lake: Chicago's Guest Quarters Suite Hotel (800-424-2900), one block from Water Tower Place, has a Getaway Package -- $99 a night for a suite that sleeps two adults and two kids in the bedroom and living room sofa bed. -- Single parents: The Sheraton Palm Coast Resort (800-654-6538), near Daytona Beach, Fla., charges $199 a night for a parent and child. Included: two rooms, full breakfast, half-day camp for kids ages three to 10, bicycle ride and kiddie perks. -- New York stretch: Spend three nights ($140 each) at the U.N. Plaza-Park Hyatt (800-233-1234) and enjoy a free limo for daytime shopping and two nights on the town. There's also a workout center complete with indoor tennis court (about $55 an hour). -- Think snow: The Sagamore (800-358-3585), 60 miles north of Albany, has several winter weekends: Cross-Country Ski ($175 to $240 per person) includes breakfast, dinner, ski instruction, trail fees and use of the spa. -- Bay bridge: A Bay Lights weekend at downtown San Francisco's Mandarin Oriental (800-622-0404) offers spectacular city views, fine food and a cable- car ride ($190 a night). -- Desert sport: In Scottsdale, Play in Paradise ($149 a night) at the Wyndham Paradise Valley (800-822-4200) features four free hours of tennis and racquetball, a health club, breakfasts, champagne and a free stay for kids under 18.
