MORE TOUGH IRS TREATMENT FOR SUFFERING TAXPAYERS

(MONEY Magazine) – I am a victim of Internal Revenue Service abuse. Your October article ''Presumed Guilty by the IRS'' was given to me the night before we were to go to trial. In fact, it was even mentioned in our trial. In 1981 my husband and I made an investment we were told was legal. The IRS later decided that it was a tax shelter and not legal, and we have been suffering the consequences over it ever since. We believe we will lose all our personal property to the IRS. We can go right down the list of problems in your article and relate to most of them. We were definitely ''presumed guilty.'' We were never looked at as individuals who could have made a mistake. I think one item that has hurt us the most is their ability to levy interest and take all the time they want. We must answer the IRS within 10 to 30 days. The IRS has 150 days or as long as necessary. We even had gaps of three years. Do they care? Sure they do. They care that they take as long as possible because the interest builds up for them.
