ATTENTION, CATALOGUE SHOPPERS!
(MONEY Magazine) – You may want to cut back on mail-order purchases in '91. Many catalogue companies, stung by recent sharp rate hikes by the U.S. Postal Service and United Parcel Service, are charging about 10% to 35% more this year for shipping their merchandise. Below, you can see how seven leading cataloguers are offsetting higher expenses by increasing fees to customers: J. Crew Raised shipping and handling fees by 12% to 33% for orders of $40 or more -- to $5.50 on purchases of up to $99.99, and to $6.50 above that amount J.C. Penney Increased average shipping fee by as much as 27%, to $4.64 Lands' End Boosted shipping and handling fees by 21%, to $4.25 Lillian Vernon Mailing out 12% fewer catalogues this year; bumped up shipping fee as much as 34%; maximum fee: $11.95, for orders over $100 L.L.
