(MONEY Magazine) – In the 1980s, Risky Business star Tom Cruise made Ray-Ban's '50s-style Wayfarer ($82) the sunglasses of the decade. This year, though, prices on the coolest shades are way up ($150 to $300 for some designer brands), even as the styles have reverted to retro models. Demand is especially strong for the elegant unisex Giorgio Armani 101S (above, front), even at $190 a pair. If you can do with a little less cachet for slightly less cash, check out the new Dakota Smith line by California Design Studio. Smith's sassy specs cost $80 to $145 and come in 65 shapes, each with four to eight different colors -- including the ice-cool blue Saturday Nights ($105) pictured above. Both brands are sold at major department stores and Sunglass Huts. Like all top- quality sunglasses, the Wayfarers, Armanis and Dakota Smiths have optical- quality lenses that fully protect your eyes from the sun's ultraviolet rays. Don't waste your money on shades that fail to promise 100% UV protection.
