Life insurance discounts; advice for new-home buyers; checking on your water; three helpful how-to videos HOT STUFF TAKE A HIKE
(MONEY Magazine) – Granola-chomping tree huggers and latte-sipping city dwellers have something new in common: a mushrooming fondness for today's functional soft-sided hiking boots. Two hot sellers: the $75 Taos steppers by Merrell (above) and the $92 Clarion IIs from Vasque. Sold at specialty outdoor stores like Eastern Mountain Sports and REI, the boots are sturdy enough for a hike over rocky trails yet comfortable enough to wear around town. And unlike conventional all-leather hiking boots that weigh in at four pounds a pair and cost $100 to $300, these babies, made from breathable nylon and leather, weigh a mere two pounds or so and cost $60 to $95. (You can spend about $50 more for waterproof versions, but unless you're heading to a rain forest, just buy a can of $5 - water repellent.) Hiking pros favor styles featuring a steel shank in the sole to keep your foot stable on the trail. Also, be sure the lining is made of quick-drying fabric like Cambrelle. The last thing you want to wear are squishy boots. |
