Wise Up

(MONEY Magazine) – FROZEN YOGURT is ice cream's healthful alternative, right? Not necessarily. A four-ounce serving of Haagen-Dazs Vanilla Frozen Yogurt, for example, contains 170 calories, 50mg of cholesterol and 50mg of sodium. The same amount of supposedly naughty Breyers Vanilla Ice Cream -- with, yes, 10% butterfat -- yields 20 fewer calories (150), half the cholesterol (25mg) and no more salt. But all yogurts are not created equal. Health-conscious consumers should scan labels for brands with no more than four grams of fat and 10mg of cholesterol per serving. Those called low-fat are just that and generally have fewer calories too. Above all, steer clear of candy and nut combos, such as pralines or Heath Bars, which push calories, fat and cholesterol well into the range of the richest ice cream.
