A STRONG PLEA FOR REAL TAX REFORM

(MONEY Magazine) – Stories such as January's "Slash Your Taxes by 30% or More" are very disturbing. You tell us about a family with a $100,000 yearly income paying zero taxes for the past six years. That may be brilliant strategy, but is it fair? No way. And then there's your report in Money Newsline on Ross Perot. The poor guy has to pay 8.5% of his $230 million gross in taxes, while the average household with $40,000 income pays 11%. So much for the graduated-rate system. What we desperately need is not more articles on how to avoid taxes, but massive reform of a system that is grossly unfair. William B. Wechner Longview, Wash.
