AFTER CLINTON, AUDITS FOR ALL
(MONEY Magazine) – I read April's "MONEY Audits the Clintons" with great interest. Your analysis of the President and Hillary's federal tax returns for the years 1980 through 1992 was welcome news. Now please analyze the returns of some of the President's critics in Congress. All elected officials should be willing to lay their affairs on the table for public scrutiny. Mary Morabito Temple City, Calif. I certainly am grateful to you for alerting me to possible mistakes like the ones you say were made by the Clintons when, according to your audit, they underpaid their federal taxes by $16,358 from 1980 to 1992. Just think what a service you could perform with follow-up analyses of the 12-year tax returns of other prominent couples in public life. For example, the minority leader of the Senate, Robert Dole, and his wife Elizabeth Dole, president of the American Red Cross. But why limit it to couples? Why not audit all the justices of the Supreme Court, some high-level CEOs with their stock options and bonuses, and some publishers and television network executives? Kathryn C. Nye East Lansing |
