Getting in touch with Generation X
By

(MONEY Magazine) – I AM A 25-YEAR-OLD AVID reader of MONEY who was elated to see an upbeat article on my generation, June's "Generation X Strikes Back." With much of the media declaring us "slackers" who can't seem to leave Mommy and Daddy and haven't a clue about finances, it's good to finally see some publicity about | four successful members of my generation. David K. Ebersole CONNEAUT, OHIO

THANK YOU FOR CREDITING my peers with the respect that they deserve. Generation X-ers are an extraordinarily well educated and technologically literate group of independent contractors and entrepreneurs. Rather than whining about a lack of opportunity, today most of us are creating it. Drew C. Massey NEW YORK CITY

EACH OF THE FOUR RECENT Northwestern University college graduates profiled in your article has at least one parent who is a practicing physician. All four hardly represent the generation of current college students. It would have been much more appropriate to include some children of more modest family incomes. Roger Brideau PORTAGE, MICH.

I WAS DISMAYED BY YOUR UPbeat conclusion about Generation X: "Many of these young people are prospering." To begin with, your sample group came from an elite private university and they are all the children of parents who got them through school free of debt. I would suggest you talk to graduates from public universities, preferably those without a large amount of unearned assets. I graduated from law school a year ago and have not found legal work anywhere in California. I'm back at home, and the only people who call are my creditors. That's the real Generation X experience. George C. Collins SUNNYVALE, CALIF.
