DON'T SWING AT THE STATUS PITCH

(MONEY Magazine) – MasterCard International is aiming two new "prestige" cards at people who earn more than $75,000 a year. One is a Platinum Class card, which offers a credit line up to $100,000, vs. a $25,000 cap on most gold cards. First USA has already begun pitching its no-fee MasterCard Platinum card (annual rate: 12.99%). Making its debut in April is the World MasterCard. Modeled after American Express' $300-annual-fee Platinum card, World MasterCard will have no preset spending limits and will tout travel assistance and other convenience features.

If you need a really big credit line, a no-fee Platinum card can be a good deal, provided you get a low rate. But experts are dubious about the World MasterCard, which is expected to charge hefty fees for services that you may not use, such as emergency legal assistance. Says card analyst Robert McKinley: "It's a marketing gimmick more than anything else." Our advice: Don't be swayed by status when picking a card.
