Reaching Out
By Joan Caplin

(MONEY Magazine) – CHALLENGE: Once a human-resources executive at Kaiser Permanente, Tracy Brown, 44, now earns $175,000 a year from her speeches and training seminars on improving workplace diversity. But she's still not satisfied. "I want to help as many people as possible learn how to work effectively with others," she says, "though it's hard to spread out when you're only a company of one."

SOLUTION: To attract clients, Brown set up a mail-order business to sell audiotapes of her training sessions. "Once people hear me, they often want to hire the woman behind the words," she says with pride. She also sells T-shirts and buttons with come-together slogans on them, such as WAKE UP AND SMELL EQUALITY and ERACISM. Next up in her line of training tools is a book, Breaking the Barrier of Bias, which she plans to complete by year-end. So far, her spin-off items contribute only about 5% to Brown's income, but she expects that to increase to 25% within five years. "I'm constantly coming up with new ways to market my message," she adds.
