(MONEY Magazine) – If the Northwest Airlines strike had you worried about losing miles on the airline's WorldPerks program that were due to expire at the end of the year, don't sweat it: Northwest has extended the program for an extra year to accommodate those inconvenienced by the strike, making those miles valid through Dec. 31, 1999.

Asia-bound? Leave by Nov. 15, and get 30 days of air travel in Asia on Cathay Pacific (800-228-4297), with stops in up to 17 cities, for $999 ($899 plus $100 for booking less than 30 days in advance). Northwest WorldVacations (800-800-1504) offers four-night Hong Kong air and hotel packages from Nov. 16 to Dec. 15 for $699 plus taxes, from either u.s. coast--down from $740 to $870. Book at least seven days ahead. United Vacations (800-328-6877) has a five-night Bangkok package for $714 through Dec. 15. Reserve a month in advance.

If you book by Nov. 14, Amtrak offers $179 tickets that allow you to stop in up to three cities within one region of the U.S. (or $239 within two adjacent regions and $299 for anywhere in the country). Complete travel by Dec. 17 (800-872-7245).

Study break: Airline AirTran extends its student standby X-Fares through Dec. 15. Travelers ages 18 to 22 simply show up at the airport with $35 in cash and take any seat available (888-493-2737 for details).
