(MONEY Magazine) – Q. I'm looking for a new Internet service provider. Where can I find the best and least expensive service? I have a Mac, and not all ISPs are Mac-friendly. Jane Wittmann-Roll jane@monocfcu.com

A. The top search engines, such as Yahoo! and Lycos, can help you find info about, as well as Web addresses of, thousands of local, regional and national ISPs.

But with 8,300 companies around the world, The List (thelist.internet.com) is the big daddy of ISP guides. A text search tool lets you scour for particular words; "Mac" returned 4,163 results. The Directory (www.thedirectory.org), which boasts over 13,000 ISPs, is also worth a visit, although it isn't as easy to search and is geared more toward businesses than consumers. Both sites have links to pricing and contact info.

Since neither provides ratings or reviews, you might want to check out the consumer tirades about ISPs collected at Worldwide Wait (www.worldwidewait.com) or Epinions (www.epinions.com/cmsw-ISP) before committing to a service. E-mail your Web questions to borzou_daragahi@timeinc.com.
