CHINA: The International Olympic Committee's choice of Beijing as the site of the 2008 Summer Olympics will create a bonanza for China. Although the country is set to dish out some $20 billion in infrastructure improvements, according to analysts, it can expect anywhere from $25 billion to $60 billion from tourism alone, combined with an additional $5 billion from selling broadcasting rights.

REESE WITHERSPOON: In a movie season overrun with computerized humans and talking pets, Reese Witherspoon's performance has made Legally Blonde an unexpected hit. The MGM comedy won the top spot on its opening weekend, taking in $21 million.

EARTHLINK: The stock of the No. 2 ISP shot up 6% the day it began offering high-speed Internet access over AOL Time Warner's cable lines, adding to the 205% increase from the beginning of the year.

XEROX: A U.S. district court in Illinois ordered Xerox to pay $300 million to former employees in a dispute over pension plan payments. The company is appealing.

ALLEN WHEAT: The chairman of Credit Suisse Group was ousted amid a federal probe into IPO distribution practices.

FBI: An audit found that nearly 450 weapons and 184 laptops are missing from bureau headquarters. FBI acting director Thomas Pickard says one of the missing weapons was used in a murder, and some of the laptops may hold classified data.
