(MONEY Magazine) – The oddsmakers. Amid the recent flurry of layoffs, you may be able limit the uncertainty using a tool at Dismal.com. Enter your zip code, industry, job title, most recent performance rating and company stock ticker (if it's public) to handicap your chances of losing your job in the next year. Most likely to get a pink slip in '02? Computer assemblers in San Jose (a 14.1% chance) and insurance agents in Boston (8.6%). It's safer to be a lawyer in Phoenix (2.1%).

The cyberdole. States have moved quickly this fall to let the unemployed apply for benefits online. Thirteen states now have online applications (go to www.itsc.state.md.us/info/iicmap.htm for a list); 32 others have it in the works. Florida, which rolled out its site in July, says 55% of applicants now file online.

The movers. Traffic at Monstermoving.com, the year-old relocation division of job site Monster.com, surged 153% in October as unemployment rose to 5.4%. "People are more willing to relocate in an economic downturn," says Tom Zorn, president of the division, which features mortgage quotes and real estate listings.
