Travel Buys

(MONEY Magazine) – BOUTIQUE HOTELS Boutiques' slick design and model-pretty staffs defined urban cool in the 1990s, but they've been hard hit by the travel slowdown. While "sale" is a dirty word in the boutique business, promotions are in style. Ian Schrager's hotels are adding perks to regular room rates through June. In Manhattan, the Morgans "Road Trip" package includes a double room, breakfast, drinks in Morgans Bar, dinner at Asia de Cuba, free parking and sports club passes for $295 a night, a $450 value (call 800-334-3408); at the Hudson, $195 a night includes a $60 breakfast for two in the hotel's indoor "park" (800-444-4786). In San Francisco, you can get a deluxe single or double at the Clift plus breakfast or free parking for $260 a night, a savings of $50 (800-652-5438).

The W chain offers a weekend special at W Los Angeles from Memorial Day through Labor Day--two nights in a one-bedroom suite, breakfast for two, parking and admission to the UCLA Hammer Museum plus 10% off spa treatments, for $478 per couple; it would cost $751 bought separately (888-625-5144 or www.whotels.com).

NIGHTS (AND DAYS) OF MALTA Until June 15 (and from Sept. 15 through October), you can sample spring in the Mediterranean for $999 per person, based on double occupancy, on the English-speaking islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino, just south of Sicily. The days are sunny and warm--ideal for visiting the islands' magnificent beaches as well as landmarks that range from neolithic ruins (right) to baroque churches. A package from the Malta Tourist Office and U.S. tour operators includes seven nights at a four-star hotel, breakfast, and air fare from the New York area. For a list of tour operators, go to www.visitmalta.com/us or call 877-466-2582.

HONG KONG Ritz Tours' seven-day package from Los Angeles, San Francisco or New York City runs just $888 per person, based on double occupancy, through Dec. 31. The package includes air fare, five nights (with breakfast) at the Hyatt Regency or the Kowloon Hotel and a tour of Hong Kong Island. You can add a one-day tour of Macau ($76) or a five-day Yangtze river cruise ($999). For info and reservations: www.ritztours.com or 800-900-2446.

KIDS AT SEA This summer, families traveling with two kids (ages six to 12) get 50% off each child's fare with Windjammer Barefoot Cruises, which cater to youngsters with kayaking, "snorkeling safaris" and pizza parties. Other family members pay full fare, from $345 to $700 depending on the length of the cruise. Choose from four-, five- or eight-day trips from Miami to the Bahamas, or six days to Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao. Reservations: www.windjammer.com; 800-327-2601.
