Sorry, Wrong Number
(MONEY Magazine) – For the 31,147 angry consumers who filed telemarketing-related complaints with the Federal Trade Commission last year, help is on the way: The agency has proposed the creation of a national "do not call" registry that would allow consumers to fend off unwanted telemarketers with a single toll-free phone call. If the proposal is accepted this fall, telemarketers will soon be required to compare their calling lists with the national list at least once a month, and violators will be fined $11,000. Meanwhile, the FTC has set up a Web page (http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/alerts/dncalrt.htm) where you will find URLs and phone numbers for 15 state do-not-call lists (five more states plan to start lists soon), the Direct Marketing Association's do-not-call database of 4.5 million names, and contacts for the three major credit bureaus. The FTC welcomes comments on its proposal; send an e-mail to tsr@ftc.gov if you want to weigh in. --Cybele Weisser |
