(MONEY Magazine) – FREQUENT-FLIER RULES Flying for free is about to get more expensive. This month, American Airlines is raising the cost of a last-minute award ticket for domestic travel from 40,000 miles to 50,000. But it's only one of many rising costs that frequent fliers have been dealt over the past year. Other recent gripes: Northwest Airlines in March added a $50 fee if you call the airline to make changes to your ticket once it has been issued (there's no charge if you go through www.nwa.com). And Delta and American already charge as much as $100 to cancel an award ticket and redeposit your miles. Plus, car-rental companies like Hertz now charge a small but annoying fee to earn air miles. --M.J.

FUND FEES You may have paid too much for your mutual fund. Nearly a third of broker-dealers surveyed failed to offer qualified customers discounts on large deposits in front-end-load funds, according to the National Association of Securities Dealers and the Securities and Exchange Commission. These break-point discounts (which vary by tenths of a percent, depending on the amount invested) typically apply to investments of $50,000 or more. Customers overpaid by an average of $364; just two of the 43 firms surveyed provided customers with all the available discounts. As a result, the NASD will review 2,000 broker-dealers nationwide. --C.W.
