Atari Redux
By Pat Regnier

(MONEY Magazine) – When I was 11, I was obsessed with Atari home video games, especially an insects-in-space shoot-'em-up called Yars' Revenge. It was the hot game in the summer of '82, but it cost more than $32 (about 60 bucks in today's dollars). Hard as I tried, I could not mow enough lawns to afford it. Which is why, all these years later, I just couldn't resist buying 10-in-1 TV Games for only $25. The video-game player looks and feels exactly like a classic Atari 2600 joystick, except that all the games are built into the controller, which plugs directly into your TV's audio/video inputs. It's preloaded with 10 original Atari home versions of, among others, Missile Command, Asteroids, Pong, and, yes, Yars' Revenge. (Notable omission: Space Invaders.) A generation raised on PS2 may laugh at the Atari's simple, blocky graphics; I prefer to think of them as elegantly minimalist. And most of these games are still addictive. A similar player featuring vintage Namco arcade games like Pac-Man is due this summer. TV Games is sold at big chain stores and video-game websites, but they tend to sell out quickly. Try GameStop.com and the aptly named ThinkGeek.com. --PAT REGNIER
