The Ticker
(MONEY Magazine) – DELI PICKLE Where's deflation when you really need it? Katz's Delicatessen in New York City recently informed patrons that it had to raise the price of its legendary pastrami sandwich by 45¢, to $10.95. Katz's blames the Canadian mad cow scare, which bloated prices on navel meat--the precious six to 10 pounds of beef per cow that's used for pastrami. The price of humble corned beef was unaffected. GOOD THING PASTRAMI ISN'T A VILLAGE IN ITALY You can't make port wine or Parmesan and Gorgonzola cheeses just anywhere. At least that's what the European Union is expected to argue at World Trade Organization talks in September. Europeans want international trademark rights to stop companies from slapping such regional designations on domestic imitations. Can you say, "May I have that grated cheese you shake from a green foil canister on my spaghetti, please?" HARRY'S MAGIC Just how big is Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix? So big that Barnes & Noble reported two numbers in its monthly sales release--with and without Potter. For June the bookseller announced a 10.5% rise in same-store sales from the year earlier. Sans Harry, sales were up by just 4.9%. --JOAN CAPLIN, ADRIENNE CARTER AND JONAH FREEDMAN |
