SYNOPSIS

BRAZIL - Cia Vale do Rio Doce SA (CV) definitively agreed to acquire the iron assets of Rio Tinto PLC (RT), a copper, gold and coal mining company, for 1.715 bil Brazilian reais ($750 mil US) in cash. The transaction was to include the river logistics operations in Paraguay. The acquisition was subject to regulatory approval. Concurrently, CV definitively agreed to acquire the potash assets of RT.
