Pinnacle reports loss in 2nd quarter, missing analyst estimates on hotel closures

NEW YORK (Associated Press) - Pinnacle Entertainment Inc. said Wednesday it swung to a loss in the second quarter, falling below analysts estimates, hurt by casino closures and costs to ramp up operations at its Lumiere Palace casino.

The company reported a net loss of $18.1 million, or 30 cents per share, for the three months ended June 30, compared with a profit of $9.9 million or 16 cents per share in the same period last year.

The latest quarter's results include charges for impairment of equity securities and income from discontinued operations related to insurance.

Excluding those items, the company posted a loss of $4.5 million, or 7 cents per share.

Revenue rose to $266.6 million from $232.9 million.

On average, analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial forecast a loss of 2 cents per share on earnings of $265.3 million.

The quarterly loss reflects the continued ramp-up of operations at Lumiere Place, which opened in stages over the past seven months, the flood-related closure of The Admiral Riverboat Casino for 20 days in June, the closure for refurbishment of most of Boomtown Reno's guest rooms for much of the quarter and the June closure of its truck stop.

There was also a $1.5 million severance cost associated with the resignation of a corporate officer.

Those losses were partially offset by record performance at L'Auberge du Lac and continued strength at Boomtown New Orleans casinos.

Shares fell 25 cents, or 2.1 percent, to $11.83 in morning trading. Top of page
