WWDC app lets iOS developers not attending follow along at home

(gigaom.com) -- With just a week to go before its annual Worldwide Developers Conference kicks off in San Francisco, Apple has released an iOS app that will allow attendees to more easily navigate the event, but perhaps more importantly, let those who were unable to snag tickets to watch video of developer sessions the day they occur.

This is the first time Apple has made video of the conference’s training sessions with Apple staff — which are rare and valuable interaction time for developers — available the same day. In years past, Apple has uploaded the videos weeks later to iTunes.

But this year the need for better access to these sessions was crystallized by what happened when WWDC 2013 tickets went on sale in April: all 5,000 tickets, which cost $1,600 apiece, were sold out within minutes. Apple then promised to make the daily videos available online right away.

The app, called WWDC, will also feature maps of the venue, schedules and a way to create a Passbook ticket for attending developers.

Anyone can download it for free, but access to the videos, as usual, will only be available to registered Apple developers.
