Edmunds lists cheapest cars to own
These cars can you save you money in the sales managers office and the service manager's office.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) -- The cost purchase price of a car is just one part of the its total cost. When shopping for a new car you also have to consider depreciation -- the reduction in the car's value over time -- repair costs, insurance and other factors. Sometimes a car that costs less to buy can end up costing more in the long run.

A Volkswagen Touareg, for example, costs about $38,291 to buy, not including typical options and destination charges. Over 5 years, owning a Touareg costs a total of about $50,402. A Land Rover Discovery, meanwhile, costs about $30,761 to buy. But over 5 years, it ends up costing a total of about $57,870 to own.

Auto Web site Edmunds.com recently released a list of cars with the lowest total cost of ownership in 25 different categories. These selections are based only on "cost to own," not including the purchase price. The purchase prices in the table are Edmunds.com's "True Market Value." For more information about the numbers in this table, please see the notes below the table.
