City-by-city Tax Burdens
Taxes aren't just a function of income. According to a survey conducted by the District of Columbia, a hypothetical family of four in Bridgeport, Conn. with household income of $75,000 paid an estimated $13,272 in income, property, sales and auto taxes in 2003. That's nearly five times more than they would have paid in Cheyenne, Wyo.
The study, which was released in August, looked at the tax burdens of hypothetical families in the largest city in each of the 50 states and D.C. For families with household income of $75,000, the study based property tax estimates on property valued at $254,737.
