Kenya and Tanzania Description: "The wonderful thing about Maasailand is that you can get out and walk," says Kurt Kutay, of Wildland Adventures. On typical game drives, travelers must stay in their vehicles, but here, accompanied by Maasai guides, they can follow the trail of the animals on foot. Kutay says many tourists bond with their Maasai hosts. Beyond fees, visitors very often donate funds to help improve conditions for the Maasai. One group was told about the difficulty the Maasai had obtaining water. "They showed them a small well unusable because it was damaged by an elephant." The group pledged $6,000 to fix it. "We realized that we can do so much to help these people," says Kutay. The tour combines game drives in the morning and afternoon and interactions with the Maasai in between. Maasai are tall, striking people with a fierce warrior heritage. They do not hunt, however, preferring the pastoral life of cattle-raising. They protect their herds from lions and other predators with their long spears and shields. Cost: From about $3,750 (land only) For more information: wildland.com |
