Patent pain
I want a new drug

In just over five years, the patents on Pfizer's three best selling drugs will expire.

That puts the fate of the drugs that generated 34 percent of Pfizer's second-quarter revenue up in the air as generic competitors rush in for a piece of the market. But Pfizer isn't taking the expirations lying down.

The company recently said it received clearance to sell its own generic version of its Neurontin epilepsy treatment, which was Pfizer's No. 4 drug in the second quarter. Pfizer also is putting the finishing touches on cholesterol medication Torcetrapib, the presumed heir apparent to the world's best selling medication Lipitor.

Being the largest company in the industry, Pfizer also has the biggest pipeline of drugs heading to market, says Natexis Bleichroeder analyst Jon LeCroy. But Pfizer also has the most to lose if it doesn't find adequate replacements for its best-selling medications.  »»»
