Lowest price: $24,430 with standard 3.0-liter V-6, 5-speed automatic, FWDDetails and more photos The Mercury Montego, like its sister-car the Ford Five Hundred, is based on the same vehicle platform as the Volvo S80. But there have been some improvements in side-impact protection that earned the Montego and Five Hundred a safety award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The award applies to these cars only when equipped with head-protecting side airbags. The Montego is a big car with some attributes of an SUV, including a large and flexible cargo capacity. It's also available with all-wheel-drive. It's not a thrilling car to drive -- a more powerful engine would help -- but at least the Mercury version's chrome waterfall grille and faux-Mercedes-Benz taillights add a little visual pizzazz. |
