HBOS made the top ten's biggest leap this year, from No. 38 to No. 9. The biggest improvement was in the U.K. consumer bank's overall strategic vision, which this year includes 48 non-financial performance measures, like the ranking of its credit-card products in consumer guides and the contributions of employees to charity. HBOS evaluates the environmental effects of its own facilities, and has also started investigating the environmental effects of the businesses it lends to.
