Alpha Natural Resources, Inc. is primarily engaged in the business of extracting, processing and marketing steam and metallurgical coal from surface and deep mines and mainly sells to electric utilities, steel and coke producers and industrial customers. The company operates through two segments: Eastern Coal Operations and Western Coal Operations. The Eastern Coal Operations segment consists of the mines in Northern and Central Appalachia, its coal brokerage activities and its road construction business. The Western Coal Operations segment consists of two Powder River basin mines in Wyoming. Alpha Natural Resources was founded in 2002 and is headquartered in Bristol, VA.
