Banco Espírito Santo SA engages in the provision of commercial banking services. It operates through the following segments: Domestic Commercial Banking, International Commercial Banking, Investment Banking, Asset Management, Life Insurance, Markets and Strategic Holdings, and Corporate Centre. The Domestic Commercial Banking segment includes all the banking activity with corporate and institutional customers developed in Portugal, based in the branch offices network, corporate centers and other channels and includes retail, corporate and institutional, and private banking. The International Commercial Banking segment focuses on corporate and retail customers. The Investment Banking segment provides advisory services as project finance, mergers and acquisitions, restructuring and consolidation of liabilities, preparation and offering of public and private stocks, bonds and other debt and capital instruments, brokerage services and other investment banking services. The Asset Management segment comprises of real estate funds, pension funds, as well as discretionary management services and portfolio management. The Life Insurance segment includes the activities of BES-Vida, through the sale of traditional insurance, product capitalization, and PPR's. The Markets and Strategic Holdings segment includes the investments in capital markets instruments, non-controlling strategic positions, as well as all the activity inherent to interest rate and exchange rate risk management, and long and short positions on financial instruments management. The Corporate Centre segment refers to an aggregation of corporative structures which include areas related to the Board of Directors, Compliance, Planning, Financial and Accounting, Risk Management, Investor Relations, Internal Audit, and Organization and Quality. The company was founded in 1937 and is headquartered in Lisbon, Portugal.
