The company operates through three operating segments: B&N Retail, B&N College and NOOK. The B&N Retail segment primarily under the Barnes & Noble Booksellers trade name. These stores generally offer a NOOK boutique/counter, a comprehensive title base, a café, a children's section, an educational toys & games department, a DVDs/BluRay department, a gift department, a music department, a magazine section and a calendar of ongoing events, including author appearances and children's activities. This segment also includes the company's publishing operation, sterling publishing. The B&N College segment is a contract operator of bookstores on college and university campuses across the United States. Its customer base is mainly comprised of students and faculty, where purchases can be made in campus stores, including textbooks and course-related materials, emblematic apparel and gifts, trade books, computer products and eReaders, school and dorm supplies, and convenience and café items. It also provides the school with regular payments that represent a percentage of store sales and, in some cases, include a minimum fixed guarantee. The NOOK segment includes the company's digital business, which includes the company's eBookstore, digital newsstand and sales of NOOK devices and accessories to third party distribution partners, as well as to B&N Retail and B&N College. The company was founded by Leonard S. Riggio in 1986 and is headquartered in New York, NY.
